Police Technology Glossary

This glossary is for you to understand some terms that we use in English in our field of study that you might not know. The terms are usually used while we are doing different interventions or while we are talking to each other.

assault rifle
noun
A rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use.
Example: The assault rifle is one of the most effective weapon that the SWAT possess.

bladed weapon
noun
A melee weapon with a cutting edge. Bladed weapons include swords, daggers, knives, and bayonets. Edged weapons are used to cut, hack, or slash; some edged weapons (such as many kinds of swords) may also permit thrusting and stabbing.
Example: The murder has been commited by a bladed weapon on the night of september 20th.

bomb squad
noun
A division of a police force assigned to defuse explosive devices.
Example: The bomb squad was called to this location for a suspicious package.

burglary
noun
The crime of entering a structure (such as a house or commercial building) with the intent to commit a felony (such as theft).
Example: This man is accused with many counts of burglary.

civilian
noun
A person not in the armed services or the police force.
Example: At the end of World War 2, the total of deaths was between 50 and 60 millions, which 31 millions of them were civilians.

custody
noun
Someone who is in custody or has been taken into custody has been arrested and is being kept in prison until they can be tried in a court.
Example: The man was put in the costudy of the police.

drug bust
noun
Seizure of illegal drugs by the police.
Example: We witnessed the biggest drug bust of the century last night.

interrogation room
noun
A space that is specifically designed for law enforcement officers to conduct interrogations.
Example: The suspect has been brought into the interrogation room by the officers.

judgement
noun
A decision of a court or judge.
Example: The judgement made by the court of Quebec is being criticized by the public.

K-9 unit
noun
A K-9 unit is a specialized group of law enforcement officers who use service dogs to perform the responsibilities of a general police officer.
Example: The S.W.A.T team needs the K-9 unit for this case.

marine patrol
noun
A specialty law enforcement portion of a larger police organization, who patrol in water craft. Their patrol areas may include coastal tidal waters, rivers, estuaries, harbors, lakes, canals or a combination of these.
Example: In the case of the shooting, maritime patrols searched under the bridge to find the weapon that was thrown from it.

Either of a pair of people engaged together in the same activity.
Example: My partner needed assistance during our call.

noun
Someone who makes a legal complaint against someone else in court.
Example: I had to face the plaintiff in court with my attorney.

noun
A police cadet can refer either to a trainee police officer or to a member of a youth organisation in which young people learn about and/or participate in law enforcement and police work.
Example: At the scene of the incident, police cadets were assisting officers with traffic.

riot
noun
A violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd.
Example: A riot broke out at the Palestinian manifestation.

street gang
noun
Street gangs are gangs formed by youths in urban areas, and are known primarily for street fighting and gang warfare.
Example: The street war between the two popular street gangs, the Cripz and the Bloodz is still ongoing.

SWAT
noun
SWAT or (Special Weapons And Tactics) is a designated law enforcement team whose members are recruited, selected, trained, equipped and assigned to resolve critical incidents involving a threat to public safety which would otherwise exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement first responders and/or investigative units.
Example: If you want to join the elite in the police force, the SWAT team would be your best option.

A weapon firing barbs attached by wires to batteries, causing temporary paralysis.
Example: While the suspect was trying to escape, the police officer shot him with the taser to paralyse him.

noun
Being searched for by the police because of a crime.
Example: Ted Bundy was a wanted man.

We've got a runner !
phrase
If someone does a runner, they leave a place in a hurry, for example in order to escape arrest or to avoid paying for something.
Example: When one of the officers noticed the suspect trying ro flea the scene, he yelled: "We've got a runner !"
